Skorodowany przegub kardana przed i po usuwaniu rdzy laserem

What is laser cleaning?

The technology of laser cleaning uses a focused laser beam to remove unwanted layers from the surface of a material. The process can effectively remove rust, paint, oxides, oils and industrial dirt without chemicals or abrasives.

Unlike traditional methods such as sandblasting or chemical surface cleaning, the laser works very precisely and, with well-chosen parameters, does not damage the base material.

Where is laser cleaning used?

Modern laser systems are used in many industrial and technical sectors. The technology is used, among other things, for:

  • removing rust from steel structures,
  • cleaning machine parts,
  • preparing surfaces for welding or painting,
  • restoring industrial parts,
  • cleaning moulds and technical components,
  • removing paint and protective coatings.

Laser cleaning works especially well where high precision is needed and the surface of the material should be disturbed as little as possible.

Key advantages of laser technology

One of the biggest advantages of laser cleaning is that it works without chemicals or abrasives. The process is more environmentally friendly and produces less waste during cleaning.

The main benefits of the technology include:

  • high precision,
  • no surface damage with well-chosen parameters,
  • works on many different materials,
  • no cost of abrasives or chemicals,
  • effective cleaning without dismantling,
  • a modern and safe process.

What we laser-clean in metal

  • Injection moulds and machine parts: the laser does not change the dimensions or roughness of the working surface, so the part goes back into production exactly as it was before it got dirty.
  • Steel structures, railings, fences and architectural elements with rust and old paint (how to remove old paint from metal).
  • Preparation for welding, painting and coating: clean metal, with no abrasive residue or degreasing agents.
  • Cleaning without dismantling: a machine part on site, a structure in the hall, no blasting booth and no abrasive in the mechanisms.
  • Historic metal elements (fittings, grilles, crosses): the scope of work is set by the conservator in charge, and we carry out the cleaning as agreed with them.

The equipment we use

We have 300-1000 W pulsed lasers for precision work and delicate surfaces, and 2000-6000 W CW lasers for larger industrial surfaces and steel structures. We match them to the thickness of the layer, the material and whether speed or maximum protection of the substrate matters more. We hold a laser safety officer certificate and qualifications for working at height.

When the laser is not the best choice

  • Large, plain surfaces of structural steel where roughness after sandblasting does not matter: sandblasting will usually be cheaper.
  • Deep pitting corrosion: the laser will clean the pits down to bare metal, but it will not rebuild lost material.
  • Very thick, multi-layer coatings on a large surface: it can be done, but the working time grows and it is worth comparing costs.

We will give you an honest assessment from a photo or a test. An example with a wheel rim: sandblasting wheels or laser cleaning. More on comparing the methods: laser cleaning or sandblasting.

How much does laser cleaning of metal cost

We charge for the laser system with an operator: from PLN 250 net per hour (continuous-wave CW laser) and from PLN 380 net per hour (pulsed laser), less for longer projects. How many hours a given part takes depends on the type and thickness of the layer, which is why we do a test on a sample before quoting. Details: how much does laser cleaning cost.

Frequently asked questions

Does the laser remove rust completely?

It removes rust and oxides down to bare metal. With deep pitting it will clean the bottom of the pits, but it will not fill in lost material.

Does the laser damage steel?

With well-chosen parameters it does not change the dimensions or structure of the base material. We set the parameters during a test on a sample.

Does the part have to be dismantled?

Usually not. We work at the client’s site: in the hall, at the structure, also at height.

Does the metal need protecting after cleaning?

Yes. Cleaned steel quickly develops a film of oxidation, so it is best painted or protected as soon as possible after cleaning.

Do you have a part with rust or old paint?

Send a photo of the surface to biuro@omme.pl or WhatsApp: we will tell you whether the laser makes sense here. Phone: 570 471 653.
