In short: Old paint on a gate, railing or fence can be removed with a wire brush, an angle grinder, chemical stripper, sandblasting or a laser. A laser takes off oil paint and enamels without abrasive and without chemicals, does not scratch the steel and also works on site. There are exceptions: steel with powder coating, where sandblasting is often faster and more cost-effective, and large, flat surfaces.
Why is old paint so hard to remove from metal?
Paint on a gate or railing is usually several layers from different years, often over rust that has come through from underneath. It flakes off in sheets, but in corners, welds, ornaments and around bolts it stays put. New paint will not hold on an old coat that is coming off, so everything loose has to go before repainting, ideally down to clean steel.
What removes old paint from metal: brush, chemicals, sandblasting or laser?
- Wire brush and grinder: cheap and to hand, but slow work, poor in recesses and ornaments, and a grinder scratches and removes metal.
- Chemical stripper: it softens the paint, but the layers must be scraped off and the residue washed away and disposed of. With many layers it usually takes several rounds.
- Sandblasting: fast on large, flat surfaces and sometimes cheaper. It leaves a rough surface, and the abrasive goes everywhere, so on site the surroundings need protecting.
- Laser: removes paint and rust layer by layer, with no abrasive and no chemicals. It reaches ornaments and corners, and the steel stays smooth. On a large, flat surface it is usually slower than sandblasting.

When does a laser make sense for a gate, railing or fence?
People choose a laser when they want to keep the shape and detail of the piece: wrought or ornamental gates, railings with ornaments, old fences where grinding would ruin the texture. It also helps when abrasive or chemicals are not an option because the piece stands by a house, a garden or inside a building. We clean on site (we travel to you), and smaller pieces can be brought to us. More on the service: laser cleaning.
Will a laser remove powder coating?
Poorly, and we say so plainly. Sandblasting gets through powder coating faster and cheaper than a laser. If a piece is powder-coated, we will usually recommend sandblasting, even though it is not our service. A laser does well on oil paint, enamels, lacquers and rust under paint. The surest way is to test a sample.
How does laser cleaning work, step by step?
- Photo or sample test. We assess the type of paint, number of layers and condition of the metal. That decides whether a laser makes sense and what the quote will be.
- Choosing the laser. A pulsed laser for delicate and ornamental pieces, a continuous (CW) laser for larger structures.
- Cleaning. The operator moves the beam over the piece until clean steel shows.
- Protection against new rust. Clean steel starts to rust, so painting or protection should follow as soon as possible.
How much does laser paint removal from metal cost?
We charge per hour of laser system work with an operator: from PLN 250 net per hour (continuous CW laser) and from PLN 380 net per hour (pulsed laser). For longer projects the rate is lower. Time depends on the number of layers, the size of the piece and how ornate it is, so we give an exact quote after a photo or a sample test.
Frequently asked questions
Will a laser remove old oil paint from a gate?
Yes. A laser removes oil paint and enamels layer by layer, down to the steel. We check the result on a sample first.
Will a laser remove powder coating?
Poorly. For powder coating, sandblasting is faster and more cost-effective. A laser works better on oil paint, enamels and rust.
Does the gate or railing have to be taken down?
Not always. We clean on site, and smaller pieces can be brought to us.
Does steel need sanding after the laser?
Usually not, because the laser takes the paint down to clean steel without roughening the surface. Further protection (primer, paint) depends on how the piece should look afterwards.
