In short: light dust and dirt can be washed off sandstone with water and a soft brush. Black stains, soot, moss and old paint need a method matched to the dirt, because sandstone is soft and soaks up water and chemicals like a sponge. Do not use a pressure washer, a wire brush or vinegar. On facades, detail and historic monuments, start with a trial on a small area.

Sandstone is a natural material used, among other things, for facades, stairs, walls, window sills, decorative elements and architectural details. Over time its surface can become covered with dirt, deposits, soot, atmospheric build-up, discolouration or residue of old coatings.

How do you clean sandstone so that the dirt comes off but its natural structure is not damaged? It all depends on the type of dirt, the condition of the surface and where the sandstone is. In this article we present the most popular cleaning methods and explain when laser cleaning is worth using.

Why does cleaning sandstone require care?

Sandstone is a porous and relatively delicate material. Its structure can easily change if it is cleaned too aggressively.

The wrong method can lead, among other things, to:

  • surface damage,
  • crumbling of the stone,
  • discolouration,
  • loss of natural texture,
  • damage to delicate details.

That is why, before cleaning, it is worth determining the type of dirt and the condition of the material itself. A method suitable for one surface will not necessarily be safe for another.

What kind of dirt can be removed from sandstone?

Sandstone can collect various kinds of dirt over time. Depending on where it is used, these may include:

  • dust and dirt,
  • atmospheric deposits,
  • soot,
  • surface build-up,
  • industrial dirt,
  • discolouration,
  • graffiti marks,
  • paint residue,
  • old protective coatings.

So before choosing a cleaning method, it is worth determining exactly what you are dealing with.

How to clean sandstone? The most popular methods

The cleaning method has to be matched to the type of surface and dirt. Depending on the case, water cleaning, chemical products, mechanical methods and laser technology.

Cleaning sandstone with water

Water may be enough for light surface dirt, dust or some deposits. The method is relatively simple, but its effectiveness is limited. More difficult dirt, old deposits or build-up over many years may need a more precise technology. With sandstone you also have to be careful not to soak the material too much and match the cleaning method to its condition.

Cleaning sandstone with chemicals

Specialist chemical products are used to remove some kinds of dirt. They can help remove certain deposits, discolouration or coating residue. The problem, however, is that the product has to be matched to the type of stone. The wrong product can cause discolouration or surface damage. That is why chemicals need particular care on valuable architectural elements, historic monuments and delicate sandstone.

Products for cleaning sandstone: what is OK and what to avoid?

Sandstone is soft and soaks up water and chemicals, so many popular products do it more harm than good:

  • Vinegar and acidic products can dissolve the binder in calcareous sandstones. The stone then starts to crumble.
  • Soda leaves salts in the pores, which later come out on the surface as white efflorescence.
  • A pressure washer washes out the grains of the stone and drives water deep into the wall.
  • A steel wire brush scratches the surface and leaves rust stains.

Gentler options are steam or hot water at low pressure and a soft brush, but the stone then has to dry out well. Use only specialist stone products that the manufacturer intends for sandstone, and always try them first on a small, hidden area.

Sandblasting sandstone

Sandblasting works by the mechanical action of an abrasive on the surface being cleaned. It can remove dirt effectively, but sandstone needs particular care. Settings that are too aggressive can disturb the structure of the stone, change its texture or damage delicate details.

For this reason, sandblasting is not always the right solution when restoring sandstone elements.

Cleaning sandstone with a laser

One of the modern methods of cleaning sandstone is the use of laser technology. The laser acts precisely on the layer of dirt on the surface of the material. With the right settings, deposits, build-up, soot and some old coatings can be removed without mechanically abrading the stone. This is particularly important when restoring elements whose natural structure should be preserved.

Limitations: on large, smooth surfaces the laser works more slowly and costs more per square metre than washing. On some light-coloured sandstones the laser can slightly change the shade of the stone, which is why we always start with a trial on a small area and only then set the parameters and the price.

How does laser cleaning of sandstone work?

During laser cleaning, a focused beam of light is directed at the sandstone surface. The laser energy acts on the dirt or unwanted layer on the surface. The operator sets the machine parameters to suit the material and the dirt. This makes it possible to clean the surface gradually and control the result throughout the process. The technology needs no abrasives, and the process can be carried out with great precision.

How to remove deposits from sandstone?

Deposits on sandstone can form because of moisture, the weather and pollutants in the air. Light deposits can be removed with gentle cleaning methods. If the build-up is many years old or firmly bonded to the surface, a more advanced technology may be needed. Laser cleaning removes the layer of dirt precisely, so it can also be used for demanding restoration work.

How to remove soot from sandstone?

Soot can appear on sandstone because of a fire, heating of the building or long exposure to polluted air. Removing soot can be difficult because of the porous structure of the material. Heavy scrubbing or random chemicals can damage the surface further. With heavily soiled sandstone, it is worth assessing the condition of the material first and choosing a method suited to the type of dirt.

A common case at home is a sandstone fireplace. The soot gets into the pores of the stone at and above the hearth. Washing with detergent smears it deeper, while the laser removes it from the surface without water.

How to remove paint from sandstone?

Old paint coatings can be particularly hard to remove. Mechanical abrasion can disturb the structure of the sandstone, and the wrong chemicals can cause discolouration. Laser cleaning can gradually remove selected coatings from the surface of the stone, so it can be used when restoring elements where preserving the original structure of the material matters.

Black stains and crust on sandstone: where do they come from and how do you remove them?

Black stains on facades, portals and sculptures in cities are usually a hard crust of soot and air pollution bonded to the surface of the stone. Water and a brush will not remove it, and scrubbing hard takes the top layer of sandstone and the detail away along with the crust. The laser is one of the methods conservators use precisely for this kind of build-up, because it removes the crust layer by layer. This is how we cleaned a historic sandstone portal in Germany.

Moss, algae and lichen on sandstone

Green and grey biological growth is removed mechanically, with a soft brush, and with a biocide intended for stone. The growth comes back where the stone is constantly wet, so first you have to remove the cause: a leaking gutter, a leak, standing water or permanent shade. The laser will remove the growth without scrubbing, but it will not remove the moisture in the wall.

Where is sandstone cleaning used?

Sandstone cleaning is used on many kinds of buildings and architectural elements.

Sandstone facades

Facades are exposed to dust, atmospheric deposits, soot and traffic dirt. A suitable method restores their natural look without disturbing the surface unnecessarily.

On a facade you always start with a test panel: a small area cleaned with different methods. Only there can you see which method removes the dirt and not the stone.

Stairs and floors

Sandstone stairs and floors are heavily used, so dirt and discolouration can appear on them over time.

Architectural details

Cornices, portals, columns, window sills and other decorative elements need particular precision. In such cases aggressive mechanical methods may be inadvisable.

Historic monuments and buildings

Sandstone is often found in historic buildings and monuments. When restoring them, preserving the original structure and details of the material is especially important.

The scope and method of cleaning are set by the conservator in charge of the work, and a building on the register of historic monuments needs a permit from the regional monument conservator. We carry out the laser cleaning according to their decisions. More in the article on laser cleaning of historic monuments under a conservator’s supervision.

How to prepare sandstone for cleaning?

Before starting work, it is worth assessing the condition of the surface carefully.

Pay attention to:

  • the type of sandstone,
  • how dirty it is,
  • the type of deposit,
  • any old coatings,
  • losses and cracks,
  • the condition of architectural details.

On more demanding jobs, it is worth doing a cleaning trial on a small area of the surface. This lets you assess the result and choose the right working parameters.

Home methods: when are they enough?

For a sandstone window sill, step or fireplace, clean water, a soft brush and patience are usually enough. Do not use vinegar, soda, a wire brush or a pressure washer. For a facade, detail, black crust or a historic monument, it is better to hand the work over to a professional, because a mistake on sandstone cannot be undone.

Not sure what to choose? Send a photo of the surface to biuro@omme.pl or via WhatsApp, and we will tell you whether the laser makes sense here. You can also call: 570 471 653.

Which sandstone cleaning method should you use?

There is no single method suitable for all surfaces.

For light dirt, gentle cleaning with water may be enough. For certain kinds of dirt, specialist products can be used. Mechanical methods may work in some applications, but they need the right parameters.

Laser cleaning is particularly interesting where precision and minimal mechanical intervention in the material matter.

Why choose laser cleaning for sandstone?

Laser technology allows precise control of the cleaning process and reduces the need for abrasive methods.

The main advantages include:

  • high precision,
  • no abrasives,
  • no need for aggressive chemicals,
  • can clean delicate surfaces,
  • can work on architectural details,
  • preserves the natural structure of the material with correctly chosen parameters.

That does not mean, however, that the laser will be the best solution for every job. The final choice of method should depend on the type of dirt and the condition of the sandstone.
